Wisconsin Dells Polish Fest, as we know it, grew out of what was originally "Polish Day" a one-day picnic in the park was run by the Polish Club of Wisconsin Dells with no live music but a fun atmosphere.
In 1990, Patrick Henry Cukierka and Richard Makowski expanded the idea for a Polish Fest, and when first held at the now defunct "Dells Crossroads" which was originally known as "Fort Dells,"  Polish Fest's first line-up included some legends of the Polka field: Marion Lush, The Ampol-Aires, Lil' Richard, and Stas Bulanda.  We also included Polish Folk dance groups and a Polish Mass on Sunday because we always wanted this to be a "Polish" Fest and not a "Polka" Fest.  The following year (1991) we moved to Riverview Park where we stayed for 14 years until 2005 when we moved to Mr. Makowski's property for the 2005 and 2006 events.  We realized that the area we were in was too small for the crowds that were coming and in 2007 we were very grateful when the owner of Mount Olympus Water and Theme Park offered the facilities of Mount Olympus to host Polish Fest.  In fall 2010, Mount Olympus Resorts acquired several hotel properties in Wisconsin Dells including those owned my Mr. Makowski.  Contrary to what you may have received in the mail (which was not from me) or what someone may be trying to "sell" you, there will no longer be a Wisconsin Dells Polish Fest as you have known and as I, with Mr. Makowski created.
Really, how many festivals can you run at one time at the same place?!

Dear Mr. Henry,

We received the information about the music fest in Wisconsin Dells and realized very quickly that, despite the many Polish style polka bands involved, the event was going to be different from the Polish Fests in the past, many of which we attended.  We visited Poland twice  to see  relatives near Torun and had the opportunity to see many other parts of Poland. We both have developed a real interest in Polish culture.

While we have attended many of the Polish Fests in the past and enjoyed listening and dancing to the polka music, we were  even more appreciative of the Polish food, folk dancers, singers, and other cultural events. We will miss these very much and would like to thank you and your associates for all your efforts in the past devoted to organizing this wonderful event. We fear that these food and cultural opportunities are a thing of the past in the Dells area, but if there is any attempt to resurrect anything similar to what existed in the past, we will be interested in knowing about it. We will enjoy hearing the polka bands again this year, but have mixed emotions about supporting an activity that focuses on only the polka aspect of the original fest.  In a way  it may be exploiting the groundwork that you folks have laid over the years in  your efforts  to develop the Polish Fest.
Good luck and best wishes regarding any future attempts at promoting Polish culture in Wisconsin.

Hey Patrick,

Not sure that you remember me by name. I'm Bob Dworak,
drummer with Frank Gentille and The Joe Pat Band.
I'm very sorry to hear that you no longer will be associated
with the Wisconsin Dells Polish Fest. Unfortunately, I have
never been able to attend, but really wished that I could.

Just found out last year, that my brother who Lives In
Twin Lakes Wisconsin, didn't even think that he was a Polka
fan, has been going to the festival for years. I almost went with
him last year, but because of health issues I had to bow out.
The other day I happened to ask them if they were going to
go to the Dells Fest this year, this was his E-Mail reply which I thought that you would find interesting.

" We looked at the Dells on line and decided some time ago
that this was not what we wanted. Nancy is afraid that the
entire element will change there, what with the addition of the
rock bands and the country bands.
It was fun when it was ALL POLISH..the food, the vendors,
the people. Now, if you add that different element, I think all of
that must change and will change to accommodate the new
element. We feel that it was called the Wisconsin Dells Polish
Fest for a reason. We can go to see rock and roll bands any
weekend at any outdoor festival. Not so easy to find good polka
music. We thought that we would give the Dells a rest for this
year and see if there are any comments about it after it's over.
My guess.....the old way will never return.
I'm hoping that the original guy will split it off and make a
separate event for the Polish only".

When he refers to the other guy, he means you Patrick.
I didn't realize that you had been ruuning the festival since
1986. You are to be congratulated. That is quite an impressive
accomplishment.
As I said before, my brother and his wife live in Twin Lakes
Wisconsin. In the month of September, they are used to
finding Octoberfests and polka bands all over the place.
Their son lives in Appleton Wisconsin and every year for one weekend, they close the whole town down and the people just walk from corner to corner and on every corner is a different
polka band. Nobody worries about whether there are any rock
bands that weekend.. He claims that it is so mobbed that you
can hardly move.

Anyway, hope that you are doing well. I really miss your radio
show on Sundays. It's a shame that in an industry that already
is in such trouble, that there has to be a competition amongst
promoters trying to attract those few people that still frequent the polka affairs Instead of working together for the good of the business. Of course, nobody really wins, but a lot of people
lose, and of course the biggest loser in the end is Polka Music.
